Choose Your Trail Wisely Deep Creek Hot Springs visit tips
The most common access point is via the Bowen Ranch Trail, a 3.6-mile round trip hike with steep descents and hot return climbs.
For a more difficult but free option, use the Freedom Trail or Bradford Ridge Trail—longer and steeper, but avoids the Bowen Ranch fee.
Wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring trekking poles if needed, and be ready for exposed sun and no shade.
💧 2. Bring Plenty of Water
There’s no drinking water at the springs or trailheads.
Carry at least 2–3 liters per person, especially in summer—it can get dangerously hot.
Dehydration and heat stroke are common problems here.
🛁 3. Know What to Expect at the Springs
There are several natural pools along Deep Creek with varying temperatures (from warm to very hot).
The area is clothing-optional, so expect nudity—this is normal here.
The pools are beautiful but not filtered, so avoid submerging your head to reduce the risk of Naegleria fowleri (a rare but serious brain infection).
🧼 4. Pack Out Everything
There are no trash cans or facilities—practice Leave No Trace.
Bring a trash bag and pack out everything, including food wrappers and toilet paper.
🚫 5. No Camping at the Springs
Camping at the hot springs is prohibited by the U.S. Forest Service.
Rangers do patrol, and violators can be fined. Camp in designated areas nearby if you want to stay overnight.
